Old Mellifont Abbey is a ruined Cistercian monastery in County Louth, near Drogheda. Founded in 1142, it was the first Cistercian abbey in Ireland and played a significant role in medieval Irish history. Today, the site offers a peaceful setting with extensive grassy grounds where families can picnic and explore. Kids will enjoy climbing on the ruins and discovering the ancient stonework, the octagonal lavabo, and the chapter house. There is a small visitor centre with interpretative panels, but the main attraction is the outdoor ruin. Facilities include parking, toilets, and a picnic area. No café on site, so bring snacks and drinks. Practical tips: Wear sturdy shoes for uneven ground. Allow about 1-2 hours for a visit. The site is free of charge, making it a budget-friendly option.
